Autunno 1327: tra stupende montagne innevate, nel nord Italia, sorge un maestoso monastero. Vi giunge Guglielmo Da Baskerville, francescano ex inquisitore, teologo affascinato dalla cultura e dalla filosofia:

con lui c'è il novizio Adso da Melk, che segue il maestro dovunque egli vada. Nel monastero deve svolgersi un incontro tra francescani, domenicani e delegati papali: dovranno chiarire alcuni problemi di fede.

Il perspicace Guglielmo però si rende conto che fra i monaci c'è tensione e paura: l'abate, dopo aver tentato di rassicurarlo che tutto procede bene, è costretto a riferirgli che un giovane monaco, ottimo

miniatore, Adelmo da Otranto, è stato trovato morto ai piedi della torre del monastero: si teme qualche influenza demoniaca. Guglielmo inizia le sue ricerche per far luce sull'oscura vicenda, aiutato dal fido

Adso. Ma ben presto si rende conto che alcuni monaci fanno di tutto per ostacolarlo nell'impresa o per dissuaderlo dal ricercare le cause degli eventi.................

Storyline

1327: after a mysterious death in a Benedictine Abbey, the monks are convinced that the apocalypse is coming. With the Abbey to play host to a council on the Franciscan's Order's belief that the Church should

rid itself of wealth, William of Baskerville, a respected Franciscan monk, is asked to assist in determining the cause of the untimely death. Alas, more deaths occur as the investigation draws closer to

uncovering the secret the Abbey wants hidden, and there is finally no stopping the Holy Inquisition from taking an active hand in the process. William and his young novice must race against time to prove the

innocence of the unjustly accused and avoid the wrath of Holy Inquisitor Bernardo Gui.
