Note : This Spanish horror film was pushed as a Guillermo del Toro presentation, since he produced it, and it has quite a few things in common with his work, with the children in peril and the gothic horror elements, but it's grimmer, more downbeat affair. The whole thing rests largely on Belen Rueda's shoulders, and she does an excellent job as a desperate, damaged, but determined mother who won't let anyone stand in her way in her quest to find out what happened to her son. The whole thing oozes atmosphere, with a crumbling old mansion, dark, dank sea caves, and a brief but effective episode of paranormal investigation, but it's not above short, sharp stabs of shock and violence, like a grotesquely mutilated car crash victim or a deformed child's brief glance. It's pretty cruel and ruthless in both what it implies and where it ends up, although the beats are mostly familiar, but it's done with heaps of creepy style, and it's gorgeously shot. Definitely worth a watch if you like slow burn, gothic horror.

Laura and her physician husband move into the ex-orphanage where Laura grew up before she was adopted, with the goal of turning it into a home for special needs children. With them is their own adopted son Simón, who turns out to be living with HIV. While they're preparing for the opening of the home, Laura is unsettled by a visit from a woman who claims to be a social worker, but seems to be more interested in the house and the grounds than in Simón. After Laura sends her away, the family surprises her in a shed on the grounds at night, making Laura even more suspicious. Simón also has imaginary friends, and seems to have found a new one in the sea caves below the house, leaving a trail of shells so his friend can follow him home. During the opening party, a masquerade, Laura sees a strange child with a sack on his head, and soon after, she can't find Simón anywhere. After a lengthy search, he still doesn't turn up, and Laura, with the somewhat more reluctant help of her husband, dedicates months of her life to looking for him, while the house seems to be filled with strange noises and unsettling omens that might have something to do with her own childhood at the orphanage.

As usual with newer films, this remaster looks pretty great, with the possible exception of some weird color tinting in the near blacks, I think a result of the black level not being quite the same as intended for theatrical release, but it's minor. There's also a minor video glitch towards the end that's from the source, but it's not particularly distracting. The 7.1 track sounds great, the commentary tracks are interesting, although sadly there's only French subtitles for one of them, and none for the other.
