Il film è stato prodotto con un budget limitato e girato quasi interamente in studio. Le scene artiche sono state girate nel Montana.
Nonostante il budget limitato, la produzione volle un film realistico e investì una buona quantità di denaro nella drammatica scena in cui la Cosa interrompe il riscaldamento della base. Per realizzare questa scena fu ricostruita una sezione della base negli stessi giganteschi frigoriferi per la conservazione delle derrate alimentari che erano già stati utilizzati da Capra nel film capolavoro Orizzonte perduto
The movie was produced on a small budget and shot almost entirely in the studio. The arctic scenes were filmed in Montana.
Despite the limited budget, the production wanted a realistic film and invested a good amount of money in the dramatic scene in which the Thing stops heating the base. To accomplish this scene, a section of the base was rebuilt into the same gigantic refrigerators for the storage of foodstuffs that had already been used by Capra in the masterpiece film Lost Horizon
