What would happen if most of the earth's population was wiped out in a nuclear war and only a handful of people remained? Would the survivors revert to savagery or rebuild the human race? This "what if" scenario has been the subject of numerous "after the bomb" movies. One of the more idiosyncratic and now mostly forgotten entries in this science fiction subgenre is The World, the Flesh and the Devil, based on the prophetic 1902 novel The Purple Cloud by Matthews Phipps Shiel. The impressive and affecting end-of-the-world vistas of a deserted New York City presented in this movie are staggeringly beautiful, not to mention eerie.
