Description

You Can Be Anyone This Time Around is an Album which Timothy Leary made and organized in 1968, and released on vinyl in 1970.

Timothy Leary (October 22, 1920 – May 31, 1996) was an American psychologist and writer, known for his advocacy of psychedelic drugs. He became a sixties counter-culture icon, advocating for the use of psychedelic drugs to effect positive personal and social enlightenment.

During a time when drugs like LSD and psilocybin were legal, Leary conducted experiments at Harvard University under the Harvard Psilocybin Project, resulting in the Concord Prison Experiment and the Marsh Chapel Experiment. Both studies produced useful data, but Leary and his associate Richard Alpert were fired from the university due to the controversial nature of LSD.

Leary believed LSD showed therapeutic potential for use in psychiatry. He popularized catchphrases that promoted his philosophy, such as "turn on, tune in, drop out", and "think for yourself and question authority". He also wrote and spoke frequently about transhumanist concepts involving space migration, intelligence increase and life extension and he developed the eight-circuit model of consciousness in his book Exo-Psychology (1977).

During the 1960s and 1970s, Leary was arrested regularly and was held in 29 different prisons throughout the world. President Richard Nixon once described Leary as "the most dangerous man in America".

In 1960, after taking some psilocybin mushrooms in Mexico, he stated that he had learned more in those five hours about his conscious and Psychology than 15 years of studying. Upon his return to Harvard he established a research team on Psychoactive Drugs, starting a series of experiments on human beings. Allen Ginsberg (Beat Poet and well known underground personality) wanted to take part on the experience and also wanted to expand it, giving it to several people on the counter-culture. Leary was once again fired, and went to live in a mansion where he and a group of several people experienced Psychedelics until possession of LSD was made illegal in California in 1966, with the federal ban following shortly thereafter in 1968.

This album was originally recorded in 1968 when Leary was running for governor in California, the election that resulted in seating Ronald Reagan at the state’s helm. The first track includes several quotes from his Leary’s press conferences relating to the election. Curiously Lennon's "Come Together" was actually written for this political campaign that was aborted due to Leary's many legal problems.

Musicians participating in this project included the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles and John Sebastian. The tracks include music, speeches, and psychedlic sound effects, amazingly effective although crude compared to digital audio technology. Some of the background to the spoken messages features short samples of psychedelic music of the day, including The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish and also some of the beginning verses of Ginsberg's poem Howl.

It is an interesting glimpse at the paradigm shift of consciousness that was taking place in the hearts and minds of America during this volatile year of 1968. The “establishment” was still firmly implanted and in control, as evidenced by the arrests, defamation, and even death of its most outspoken critics. But the rising tide of consciousness emanating from this era inspired real social upheaval and change that has proven far too pervasive to be obliterated.
