Summary:

Note : Another Sergio Martino giallo here, but this one is a bit out of the ordinary. While his previous gialli, several of which we've already seen, have a few elements in common, they're twisty, full of red herrings, and very sex-focused, as well as starring a group of recurring actors, this one switches out the actors and introduces an element of extreme, slasher-like violence. There are still some Martino trademarks, including a scene at a hippie party where a woman randomly dances naked, an extremely high frequency of lesbians, and lots of boob shots, the murderer is not a calculating criminarl mastermind, but rather an out of control pervert with a hacksaw, and the murders are brutal. Gialli were turning more explicitly violent around this time, and it feels like the brutality in this was part of that transition that culminated in stuff like Deep Red. The last third of the film, in particular, is a very tense cat and mouse game with the murderer, and is really top-notch.

A group of students is shook up when two of their friends are brutally murdered within a short time of each other. After one of them gets a threatening phone call, and she's accosted by another student who seems to stalk her, she decides to leave the city, and, at her uncle's suggestion, invites three of her girlfriends to his villa in the countryside. However, the killer isn't far behind, and while several of the girls are killed off, the last of them stays in the house with the killer, unbeknownst to him, while he dismembers and dumps the bodies of the others. At the same time, the handsome young village doctor starts to suspect something is wrong, but will he figure it out on time?

This is a nice, clean remaster with well managed grain and good color. It could perhaps have been slightly sharper, but there's only so much you can do with early-70s cinematography. Both the original Italian mono and the English dub sound fine, although the Italian audio is higher quality (and, as you know by know, I always recommend the Italian soundtrack), and the commentary track with Kat Ellinger is, as usual, very worthwhile. The English dub is slightly incomplete, so there's a separate subtitle track for the parts that are still in Italian.
