Description Quote:
Pretty fuckin' gross stuff, and the slime drips fast and thick when it's configured like this, but it's hard to tell who the target market is here– there's very little overlap on the Venn diagram between people who'd want a double LP's worth of 60s garage rock with The Fuzztones as the only point of reference and people who don't already have ready access to "Action Woman," "Blackout of Gretely," and the first two Sonics albums.
As a White Album-style cornucopia and a self-contained listen, it works beautifully. As an introduction to the yowling amplifiers and unmitigated snare of garage rock's rougher end, it makes a raucous supplement to the Back From the Grave series. I question the necessity of a few somewhat gimmicky song choices (the irritating introductory track, "Dante's Inferno," was probably meant to be atmospheric, the Bill Haley and Bo Diddley tracks were probably meant to establish a lineage for the rest of the material, and that Godz number is probably here as a revisionist flourish), but almost everything here, however many times you've heard it before, absolutely smokes. If you listened to Nuggets and thought you'd like it with less of the baroque pop and psychedelia, or if you're a hardened garage rock cratedigger who dimly remembers what it was like to hear "1 - 2 - 5" for the first time, you'll have fun with this one.
