Sultans of the Slide Guitar is a compliation vinyl LP released in 1979 containing 14 excellent tracks featuring three of the best slide guitarists from the time period between 1949 and 1969. Included are Hound Dog Taylor, Johnny Littlejohn, and Robert Nighthawk, with vocals by Koko Taylor appearing on two of the Nighthawk cuts.

These recordings were mostly previously unreleased, and represent fine examples of the melding of blues and rhythm & blues from the time period that naturally progressed into the back beat and rhythm of early rock & roll. Electric slide guitar from this era bridges the sound and feel of country blues and Chicago style electric blues toward the genre of blues/rock that came about in the mid to late 1960s. These artists helped to create a foundation for the birth of rock & roll, and are absolutely worth a listen.
