William Styron - Novels, Non-fiction and Letters (15 books)

WILLIAM STYRON (1925-2006) was a critically acclaimed American novelist and essayist noted for his treatment of tragic themes and his use of a rich, classical prose style.

His first novel, LIE DOWN IN DARKNESS (1951), narrates the story of a dysfunctional Virginia family and received overwhelming critical acclaim.  Styron's experience in the Marine Corps was transformed into THE LONG MARCH (1953) about a brutal forced march undertaken by recruits.  His third published novel, SET THIS HOUSE ON FIRE (1960), is about intellectual American expatriates on the Amalfi coast of Italy.

Styron's next two novels sparked much controversy.  THE CONFESSIONS OF NAT TURNER (1967) is a sympathetic account of a bloody slave rebellion led by the title character in Virginia in 1831.  It was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1968, but critics accused the book of racism and of misrepresenting African American history.  His final novel, SOPHIE'S CHOICE (1979), portrays the growth of a friendship between a young Southern writer and a Roman Catholic woman from Poland who survived the Nazi death camp Auschwitz.  It was also a bestseller and generated significant controversy, in part due to Styron's decision to portray a non-Jewish victim of the Holocaust and in part due to its explicit sexuality and profanity.

In 1985, he suffered his most serious bout with depression, out of which he was later able to write the bestselling memoir DARKNESS VISIBLE (1990).  It explored the phenomenology of the disease among sufferers and their loved ones, and arguably became Styron's best known work during the last two decades of his life.

His other works include the play IN THE CLAP SHACK (1972) and THIS QUIET DUST (1982), a collection of essays that treat the dominant themes of Styron’s fiction.  A TIDEWATER MORNING (1993) consists of autobiographical stories.  HAVANAS IN CAMELOT (2008), a collection of personal essays on topics ranging from the author’s friendship with Pres. John F. Kennedy to his morning walks with his dog, was published posthumously.  Compilations of his correspondence were issued as LETTERS TO MY FATHER (2009) and SELECTED LETTERS (2012).
