Description

Quote:

It had been seven years since "Planisphærium" and Wormed had yet to release new material. Until "Quasineutrality" emerged. This two-track EP came out in 2010 and was welcomed, but ultimately overlooked. I mean, I wasn't a metalhead at this time, but after doing some research (looking at MetalSucks, Metal Injection, Revolver, Loudwire, Decibel, Terrorizer, ect), it was clear that there was zero anticipation for this EP. Their debut may have been a classic, but it looks like they lost the majority of their fanbase by waiting seven years to put get new material together. That isn't to say that this EP brought some back to their fanbase, as their 2013 effort, "Exodromos," was a highly anticipated album.

So after that bit of history, here's the actual review. So "Quasineutrality" has two tracks on it (before it was re-released by Willowtip in 2012 and given two bonus tracks). The typical Wormed song is about 2:30 to 3:30 in length, but these two tracks are well over four minutes each. That makes this EP short, but that doesn't mean each track has a ton of content. Because like every other Wormed song, these two have abundances of riffs.

The quality of said riffs are, to some extent, very different from their debut album. The amount and quality of slams is still there, but there's a lot more dissonant techniques on here. In Wormed's later albums (their 2013 and 2016 releases) this dissonance is seen a lot in more than one form (those forms being guitars or effects).

When it comes to production, this EP has improved greatly since "Planisphærium," which is good because it makes the dissonance come through a lot better than the first album. But the production quality hasn't completely taken over the brutality. What I mean by this is that the production hasn't made this album any less brutal. With a lot of brutal death metal acts, the production is purposely poor so that it sounds more muddy. Although "Quasineutrality" doesn't appear to sound muddy, it's still remarkably brutal.

As far as EPs go, this one is definitely a classic. It may be only two tracks, but these songs do not fail to deliver everything that Wormed has to offer. These are two of my favorite Wormed songs because of their intense riffage and mesmerizing dissonance and they only improve on this with their next two full-length releases. It's the perfect release to let people know that they weren't done after just one album. This was Wormed saying that they weren't going down just yet.
