Note : What to even say about this film? It's an anarchic sci-fi comedy about a superhero rockstar neurosurgeon physicist test pilot played by Peter Weller, with John Lithgow as a scientist whose mind has been taken over by an alien, Ellen Barkin as the love interest, Jeff Goldblum as a cowboy for some reason, Christopher Lloyd as a character named John Bigbooté, as well as Rosalind Cash, Ronald Lacey, and our old buddy Clancy Brown, playing a wholesome good guy for once. It's total chaos, and in no way should work as well as it does, but if you're willing to settle in for the ride, it's a lot of fun.

Buckaroo Banzai and his mentor Dr. Hikita have perfected the oscillation overthruster, a device that allows an object to pass through solid matter. When Banzai tests it on his jet car, he drives through a mountain and finds himself temporarily in another dimension, finding an alien organism attached to his car when he comes back. Dr. Lizardo, who's in a mental institution, sees the news about the successful test, and immediately breaks out. Lizardo had built a prototype overthruster in 1938, but tested it before it was ready, and came back from being stuck halfway inside another dimension with his personality changed. It turns out his mind has been taken over by Lord Whorfin, the leader of the hostile Red Lectroids, who had been banished to the 8th dimension by their foes, the benevolent Black Lectroids. The Black Lectroids charge Banzai and his band, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, with stopping Whorfin, if not, they will take drastic measures that will annihilate the earth. From there it's a race to get the overthruster back, save the girl and the earth, and defeat the evil aliens once and for all.

This is a quite good remaster, not fantastically sharp, but with well-managed grain, good detail, and nice color and contrast, though some colors may be a bit overly saturated. The 5.1 remaster sounds good, as does the original stereo track, and both commentary tracks are worthwhile.
