Met een klein groepje enthousiaste jongens gaat hij aan de slag. Het blijkt de juiste man, op het juiste tijdstip. Gedurende zeven maanden kneedt en schaaft hij aan het team, dat boven zichzelf uit zal groeien. Samen zullen ze het onmogelijke bereiken. Als door een wonder verslaan ze het ijshockeyteam van de Sovjetunie en winnen goud. De overwinning straalde af op de hele Amerikaanse natie.
