Amelia è una madre vedova che ha allevato da sola il figlio Samuel dopo la morte del marito in un incidente stradale. Samuel si convince che la creatura descritta nella storia sia il mostro che li perseguita, e diventa sempre più incontrollabile. Nei giorni successivi in casa si sentono rumori misteriosi, Amelia è vittima di allucinazioni, e inizia a vedere un'ombra simile al Babadook, che le intima di consegnargli suo figlio...
