Adattando il libro del giornalista di Rolling Stone David Lipsky “Come diventare sé stessi” (edito in Italia da Minimum Fax), il film porta al cinema un ritratto intimo e complesso dello scrittore David Foster Wallace, una delle stelle della letteratura americana e mondiale dei nostri anni, morto suicida il 12 settembre del 2008. Il libro di Lipsky è la cronaca di cinque giorni da lui trascorsi assieme a DFW mentre era in giro per gli Stati Uniti per un tour di reading del suo "Infinite Jest", e The End of the Tour lo adatta aggiungendoci anche alcuni spunti dalla biografia ufficiale dello scrittore, "Ogni storia d’amore è una storia di fantasmi" (Einaudi), firmata dal giornalista del New Yorker D.T. Max.

Adapting the book by journalist David Lipsky Rolling Stone "How to become themselves" (published in Italy by Minimum Fax), the film brings to the cinema complex and an intimate portrait of the writer David Foster Wallace, one of the stars of the American and world literature our years, who committed suicide on September 12, 2008. the book is the chronicle of Lipsky five days he spent together with DFW while he was traveling around the United States for a tour of his reading of "Infinite Jest", and the End of the tour also adapts it by adding a few cues from the official biography of the writer, "Every love story is a ghost story" (Einaudi), signed by former New Yorker DT Max.
